Когда за следующими выражениями следует глагол, он будет заканчиваться на -ing:

It’s no use / It’s no good (это бесполезно, это бессмысленно и т.п.)

  • There’s nothing you can do about the situation, so it’s no use worrying about it.
    Ты ничего не можешь поделать с этой ситуацией, поэтому нет смысла волноватьться об этом.
  • It’s no good trying to persuade me. You won’t succeed.
    Бесполезно (пытаться) меня убеждать. У вас это не получится.

There’s no point in - нет смысла

  • There’s no point in having a car if you never use it.
    Нет смысла иметь машину, но не ездить на ней.
  • There was no point in waiting any longer, so we went.
    Не было смысла ждать дольше, поэтому мы ушли.

Но мы обычно говорим ‘the point of doing something’:

  • What’s the point of having a car if you never use it?
    Какой смысл в том, чтобы иметь машину, если вы никогда не будете ею пользоваться?

It’s (not) worth - это (не) сто́ит

  • I live only a short walk from here, so it’s not worth taking a taxi.
    Я живу всего лишь в нескольких минутах ходьбы отсюда, поэтому не стоит вызывать такси.
  • Our flight was very early in the morning, so it wasn’t worth going to bed.
    Наш полет был очень рано утром, поэтому не было смысла идти ложиться спать.

Вы можете сказать, что фильм is worth seeing, а книгу is worth reading и т.п. :

  • What was the film like? Was it worth seeing?
    Как фильм? Стоило его смотреть?
  • Thieves broke into the house but didn’t take anything. There was nothing worth stealing.
    Воры проникли в дом, но ничего не взяли. Там не было ничего, что стоило красть. (воровать там было нечего)

Have difficulty -ing, have trouble -ing

Мы говорим ‘have difficulty doing something’ (not to do):

  • I had no difficulty finding a place to live. (not difficulty to find)
    Я без труда нашел жилье.
  • Did you have any difficulty getting a visa?
    У тебя были трудности в получении визы?
  • People often have difficulty reading my writing.
    У людей часто возникают трудности в прочтении того, что я написал.

Вы также можете сказать ‘have trouble doing something’:

  • I had no trouble finding a place to live.

Мы используем -ing после:

a waste of money / a waste of time

  • It was a waste of time reading that book. It was rubbish.
    Чтение той книги оказалось пустой тратой времени. Какая-то ерунда.
  • It’s a waste of money buying things you don’t need.
    Покупать вещи, которые вам не нужны, - пустая трата денег.

spend/waste (time)

  • He spent hours trying to repair the clock.
    Он потратил несколько часов, пытаясь починить часы.
  • I waste a lot of time day-dreaming.
    Я потратил слишком много времени на мечты (досл.: мечтая).

(be) busy

  • She said she couldn’t see me. She was too busy doing other things.

Go swimming / go fishing и т.п.

Мы используем go -ing для различных видов деятельности (особенно спортивных). Например, вы можете сказать:

go swimming
go sailing
go fishing
go climbing
go skiing
go jogging

Также go shopping, go sightseeing

  • How often do you go swimming?
    Как часто ты ходишь плавать?
  • I’d like to go skiing.
    Я бы хотел пойти покататься на лыжах.
  • When did you last go shopping?
    Когда ты последний раз ходила по магазинам?
  • I’ve never been sailing. (О gone и been см. урок 7D.)
