Употребление too и enough
Enough (достаточно) идет после прилагательных и наречий:
- I can’t run very far. I’m not fit enough. (not
enough fit)
Я не могу пробежать очень далеко. Я в недостаточно хорошей форме. - Let’s go. We’ve waited long enough.
Пошли. Мы подождали достаточно долго. - Is Joe going to apply for the job? Is he experienced enough?
Джо собирается подавать заявление о приеме на работу? У него достаточно опыта?
Сравните too ... (слишком) и not ... enough:
- You never stop working. You work too hard. (= more than is necessary)
Ты никак не прекратишь работать. Ты слишком много/усердно работаешь. (= больше, чем необходимо) - You’re lazy. You don’t work hard enough. (= less than is necessary)
Ты ленивый. Ты недостаточно усердно работаешь. (= меньше, чем необходимо)
Enough обычно идет перед существительными:
- I can’t run very far. I haven’t got enough energy. (not
energy enough) - Is Joe going to apply for the job? Does he have enough experience?
- We’ve got enough money. We don’t need any more.
- Some of us had to sit on the floor because there weren’t enough chairs.
Заметьте, что мы говорим:
- We didn’t have enough time. (not
the time wasn’t enough) - There is enough money. (not
the money is enough)
Вы можете использовать enough без существительного:
- We don’t need any more money. We’ve got enough. – У нас достаточно (денег).
Сравните too much/many и enough:
- There’s too much furniture in this room. There’s not enough space.
В этой комнате слишком много мебели. Не достаточно места. - There were too many people and not enough chairs.
Было слишком много людей и недостаточно стульев.
Мы говорим enough/too ... for somebody/something:
- We haven’t got enough money for a holiday.
У нас недостаточно денег на отпуск. - Is Joe experienced enough for the job?
У Джо достаточно опыта для этой работы? - This shirt is too big for me. I need a smaller size.
Эта рубашка слишком большая для меня. Мне нужен размер поменьше.
Но мы говорим enough/too ... to do something (not for doing). Например:
- We haven’t got enough money to go on holiday. (not
for going) - Is Joe experienced enough to do the job?
- They’re too young to get married. / They’re not old enough to get married.
Они слишком молоды для вступления в брак. / ... не достаточно взрослые ... - Let’s get a taxi. It’s too far to walk home from here.
Давай возьмем такси. До дома слишком далеко идти отсюда. - The bridge is just wide enough for two cars to pass each other.
Мост достаточно широк для того, чтобы две машины могли разъехаться.
Мы говорим:
Еда была слишком горячей, чтобы есть.
Еще примеры:
- These boxes are too heavy to carry. (not
too heavy to carry them)
Эти ящики слишком тяжелые, чтобы их унести. - The wallet was too big to put in my pocket. (not
too big to put it)
Бумажник был слишком большим, чтобы положить в карман. - This chair isn’t strong enough to stand on. (not
strong enough to stand on it)
Этот стул не достаточно крепкий, чтобы на нем стоять.

1. Закончите предложения, используя enough и следующие слова:

- Do you think I’ve got to apply for the job?
- Try this jacket on and see if it’s for you.
- There weren’t for everybody to have coffee at the same time.
2. Закончите ответы на вопросы. Используйте too или enough + слова в скобках.
- — Are they going to get married? (old)
— No, they’re not . - — I need to talk to you about something. (busy)
— Well, I’m afraid I’m to you now. - — Let’s go to the cinema. (late)
— No, it’s to the cinema. - — Why don’t we sit outside? (warm)

— No, we were what he was saying. - — Can he read a newspaper in English? (English)
— No, he doesn’t know a newspaper.
3. Составьте одно предложение из двух. Закончите новое предложение, используя too или enough.
- We couldn’t carry the boxes. They were too heavy.
- I can’t drink this coffee. It’s too hot.
- Nobody could move the piano. It was too heavy.
- Don’t eat these apples. They’re not ripe enough.
- I can’t explain the situation. It is too complicated.
- We couldn’t climb over the wall. It was too high.
- Three people can’t sit on this sofa. It isn’t big enough.
- You can’t see some things without a microscope. They are too small.
