The definite future tense: affirmative form
In the Turkish language, the definite future tense with -(y)acak / -(y)ecek describes actions that, from the speaker’s point of view, are certain to happen. It can express the following nuances:
- Firm intention
- Obligation / necessity
- Demand, order
There are a few specific rules for forming the definite future tense. The stressed affix -acak / -ecek is attached to the verb stem, followed by the personal endings.
Konuş + acak + sın = konuşacaksın (you will speak)
However, if the verb stem ends in a vowel, a buffer letter y is inserted between the two vowels:
Oku + Y + acak + sın = Okuyacaksın (you will read)
The second feature in the formation of the future tense is the mutation of the letter k to ğ when it is positioned between two vowels upon adding the personal ending (for “I” and “we”):
Çalış + acağ + ım = çalışacağım (I will work)
Çalış + acağ + ız = çalışacağız (we will work)
yapmak
ben yap + acağ + ım
sen yap + acak + sın
o yap + acak
biz yap + acağ + ız
siz yap + acak + sınız
onlar yap + acak + lar
gitmek
gid + eceğ + im
gid + ecek + sin
gid + ecek
gid + eceğ + iz
gid + ecek + siniz
gid + ecek + ler
okumak
oku + y + acağ + ım
oku + y + acak + sın
oku + y + acak
oku + y + acağ + ız
okuy + acak + sınız
oku + y + acak + lar
izlemek
izle + y + eceğ + im
izle + y + ecek + sin
izle + y + ecek
izle + y + eceğ + iz
izle + y + ecek + siniz
izle + y + ecek + ler
1. Yarın akşam parka gideceğim. - I will go to the park tomorrow evening.
2. Babam yemekten sonra gazete okuyacak. - My father will read a newspaper after eating.
Exercise 10.1. Write the verbs in the affirmative form of the definite future tense (for the 1st person singular ‘Ben’ - I).

Negative and interrogative forms of the future tense
When forming the negative form of the definite future tense, the negative affix -ma / -me is attached to the verb stem first, followed by the future tense marker -acak / -ecek and the personal affixes. Since the negative affix ends in a vowel and the future tense affix begins with a vowel, the buffer letter y will always be written between them:
1. Bugün çok yoruldum. Ders çalışmayacağım. - I am very tired today. I will not study.
2. Fatih hasta. Sinemaya gitmeyecek. - Fatih is sick. He will not go to the cinema.
Exercise 10.2. Form the negative definite future tense from the following verbs (for the 1st person singular ‘Ben’ - I):
Yazmak, gelmek, beklemek, oynamak, çıkmak, başlamak, gezmek, bitirmek, koymak, izlemek, sormak, bakmak, söylemek, okumak, sevmek, konuşmak, vermek, yapmak.

The interrogative form is constructed according to the general rules: the question particle mı / mi is written separately from the verb and takes the personal endings. The exception is the third person plural form, where the personal affix is attached directly to the verb, and the question particle remains without any formal markers:
yapmak
ben yapacak mıyım?
sen yapacak mısın?
o yapacak mı?
biz yapacak mıyız?
