The reciprocal-cooperative voice
In the Turkish language, the reciprocal-cooperative voice denotes actions that are performed reciprocally by multiple subjects (each doing the action to the other).
- İki araba çarpıştı. - Two cars collided.
- Bu konuyu uzun süre tartıştık. - We argued about this topic for a long time.
The reciprocal-cooperative voice also denotes actions performed by multiple subjects cooperatively or simultaneously (doing something together).
- Teyzemle annem uzun süre ağlaştılar. - My mother and aunt cried together for a long time.
- Çocuklar gülüşmeye başladılar. - The children started laughing together.
The reciprocal-cooperative voice is formed using the affix -ş after vowel stems and -ış, -iş, -uş, -üş after consonant stems. These affixes can only be attached to a certain number of verb bases.
selâmlamak - selâmla - ş - mak - to greet each other
anlamak - anla - ş - mak - to understand each other, to come to an agreement
görmek - gör - üş - mek - to see each other, to meet
bakmak - bak - ış - mak - to look at each other
Some verbs, despite having the formal marker, do not have or have lost their reciprocal-cooperative meaning:
Gelişmek - to develop
Yatışmak - to calm down, to subside
Yetişmek - to catch up, to arrive on time
Alışmak - to get used to
Çalışmak - to work, to try
On the other hand, a different group of verb bases carries a reciprocal-cooperative meaning inherently, but does not have the corresponding affixes. In such verbs, there is no primitive base from which this voice is derived:
Savaşmak - to fight, to wage war
Barışmak - to make peace, to reconcile
Konuşmak - to talk, to speak
Yarışmak - to compete
Güreşmek - sports. to wrestle
Exercise 24.6. Write the sentences using the reciprocal-cooperative voice.
- Birbirimizle caddenin sonundaki kahvehanede gördük.
- Film seyrederken güldük.
- Ben onu anladım.
- İki araba birbirlerine çarptı.
- Babamla annem birbirleriyle bir temmuz akşamı tanımışlar.

The word-building affix -ın (-in, -un, -ün)
This word-building affix is relatively unproductive in the Turkish language. It forms a few verbal nouns and is represented by the variants: -ın, -in, -un, -ün.
Sormak - sor + un - problem
Basmak - bas + ın - press, media
Tütmek - tüt + ün - tobacco
Gelmek - gel + in - bride (i.e., the one who comes to the husband's house)
Additionally, one adjective is formed using this affix:
Sayın - dear, esteemed
