Verbal Adverbs (Gerunds) in the Turkish language

The verbal adverb ending in -(y)a, -(y)e
The verbal adverb ending in -(y)a, -(y)e denotes a secondary (accompanying) action and answers the question nasıl “how?”.
The form ending in -a, -e is usually used in a doubled (reduplicated) form and expresses a repeated, intensive, or continuous action.
This form is created by attaching the affix -a/-e to a verb stem ending in a consonant, or -ya/-ye to a stem ending in a vowel:
Yazmak - yaz + a = yaza yaza
Oynamak - oyna + y + a = oynaya oynaya
Gülmek - gül + e = güle güle
Dinlemek - dinle + y + e = dinleye dinleye
- Geze geze sahile indik. - Strolling along (by constantly walking), we went down to the shore.
- Güle oynaya okula gidiyor. - Laughing and playing, he goes to school.
Sometimes, the form ending in -a, -e simply denotes a continuous action that leads to a specific result. In such cases, this form loses its adverbial meaning.
- Ağlaya ağlaya gözlerinde yaş kalmamış. - She cried and cried, and there were no tears left in her eyes.
- Yaza yaza parmaklarım şişti. - I wrote and wrote, and my fingers swelled up.
Exercise 21.1. Write the sentences using the verbs given in brackets in the -(y)a, -(y)e form.
- Bacalardan çıkan dumanlar, (kıvrılmak) yükseliyordu.
- Fatma’nın annesi (hıçkırmak) ağlıyordu.
- (ağlamak) şirketten çıkıp gitti.
- Ben gökler, kuşlar, dağlar sesini (dinlemek) dolaşıyordum.

The verbal adverb ending in -(y)ıp, -(y)ip, -(y)up, -(y)üp
This form is created by attaching the corresponding affixes to the verb stem: -(y)ıp, -(y)ip, -(y)up, -(y)üp.
Gelmek - gel + ip = gelip
Açmak - aç + ıp = açıp
Bakmak - bak + ıp = bakıp
The verbal adverb ending in -(y)ıp, -(y)ip, -(y)up, -(y)üp denotes a secondary action that chronologically precedes the main action. In English, it is most often translated using “and” to connect two verbs, or by using a gerund phrase (“Having done...”, “After doing...”).
- Ali çok ders çalışıp başarılı oldu. (Ali çok ders çalıştı. Başarılı oldu). - Having studied a lot (Ali studied a lot and), Ali became successful.
- Bu hikâyeyi yazıp bana getireceksin. - Write this story and bring it to me (Having written this story, bring it to me).
Exercise 21.2. Write the sentences using the verbs given in brackets in the -(y)ıp, -(y)ip, -(y)up, -(y)üp form.
- Şimdi (giyinmek) gelirim.
- Anne hamur (yoğurmak) ekmek yaptı.
- (Gezmek) eğlendin mi?
- Bir süre (oturmak) TV izlediler.
- Doktor yine (gelmek) Ahmet’le konuştu.
- O hafifçe (gülümsemek) Meryem’e baktı.

The verbal adverb ending in -(y)arak, -(y)erek
This verbal adverb form is created by attaching the affix -(y)arak, -(y)erek to the verb stem:
Bakmak - bak + arak - bakarak
Gülmek - gül + erek - gülerek
This verbal adverb denotes a secondary action occurring simultaneously with the main one. It translates into English using the “-ing” form (present participle/gerund) meaning “by doing” or “while doing”.
- Kuşlar kanat çırparak uçtular. - The birds flew, flapping their wings.
- Sağa sola bakarak yürüyorlar. - They are walking, looking left and right.
Sometimes, the form ending in -(y)arak, -(y)erek can express a conditional meaning:
Hasta dinlenerek iyileşecek. - The patient will recover by resting (if they rest).
The verb olmak forms the word olarak, which has a special meaning translated into English as “as” or “in the capacity of”:
Buraya şef olarak değil misafir olarak geldim. - I came here not as a boss, but as a guest.
Exercise 21.3. Write the sentences using the verbs given in brackets in the -(y)arak, -(y)erek form.
- Onlar odasına (çıkmak) yattı.
- Sonra da dua (etmek) çekip gitti.
- Serdar (koşmak) yemek salonundan çıktı.
- Anne bunun üzerine (gülümsemek) yerine oturdu.
- Çocuklar (koşmak) eve geldi.
- Torbayı elleri (titremek) yerine koydu.

The verbal adverb ending in -madan, -meden
The form ending in -madan, -meden represents a negative adverb of manner and is the negative counterpart of the affirmative form ending in -(y)arak, -(y)erek.
- Bu geceyi uyumadan geçirdim. - I spent this night without sleeping.
- Bunu yüzüme bakmadan (cf. bakarak) söyledi. - He said this without looking at my face.
The form ending in -madan, -meden denotes a secondary action that occurs (or occurred/will occur) before the action expressed by the main verb. It is usually translated into English using “without doing” or “before doing”.
- İyice düşünmeden karar verme. - Do not make a decision without thinking carefully.
- Seni görmeden gitmeyeceğim. - I will not leave without seeing you.
When used with the postposition önce, the form ending in -madan, -meden creates a grammatical unit in the Turkish language translated into English as “before”.
- Bu okula gelmeden önce Türkçe bilmiyordum. - I didn’t know Turkish before coming to this school.
- Bir işe başlamadan önce plan yapmalısın. - Before starting a job, you must make a plan.
Exercise 21.4. Write the sentences using the verbs given in brackets in the -madan, -meden form.
- Aysel sesini (çıkarmak) uzun süre tereddüt etti.
- Oturup bekliyorlar. Hem de hiç (kımıldamak).
- Konuklarımız (gelmek) biraz önce en güzel elbisemi giydim ve saçlarımı taradım.
- Ferhat, yanına para (almak) çarşıya gitti.
- Sinan, şişedeki sütü bardağa (koymak) hemen içti.

Exercise 21.5. Combine two sentences into one using the -madan, -meden forms.
- Oktay kapıyı çalmadı. Sınıfa girdi.
- Ninem, kapıyı kilitlemedi. Uyudu.
- Murat, ev ödevlerini yapmadı. Okula geldi.
- Yusuf yağmurlu havada şemsiyesini açmadı. Yürüdü.
- Kardeşim dişlerini fırçalamadı. Uyudu.
- Ceyhan, musluğu kapatmadı. Balkona çıktı.

The verbal adverb ending in -(y)ınca, -(y)ince, -(y)unca, -(y)ünce
This verbal adverb form is derived from verb stems and expresses a secondary action upon the completion of which the main action immediately takes place. The verbal adverb ending in -(y)ınca, -(y)ince, -(y)unca, -(y)ünce depicts a sequence of events. This form can denote both repeated and single actions.
In English, it is translated using conjunctions such as “when”, “as soon as”, “upon doing”, etc.
Almak - al + ınca = alınca
Gelmek - gel + ince = gelince
Konuşmak - konuş + unca = konuşunca
Görmek - gör + ünce = görünce
- Yağmur yağınca yollar çamur oldu. - When it started raining, the roads became muddy.
- Çiçekler açılınca çevreye çok güzel kokular yayıldı. - When the flowers bloomed, very beautiful scents spread around.
- Söz verince mutlaka yerine getirmelisin. - Upon promising (once you make a promise), you must absolutely fulfill it.

The word-building affix -ı (-i, -u, -ü)
With the help of the word-building affix -ı, -i, -u, -ü attached to verb stems, nouns (and less frequently, adjectives) with various meanings are formed.
Sormak - sor + u - question
Dizmek - diz + i - string, row, TV series
Saymak - say + ı - number, quantity
Gezmek - gez + i - stroll, trip
Göstermek - göster + i - show, demonstration
Yazmak - yaz + ı - article, writing, inscription
Örtmek - ört + ü - cover, blanket
Ölçmek - ölç + ü - measure, measurement
Kokmak - kok + u - smell, scent
Dolmak - dol + u - full (also hail)
Batmak - bat + ı - west
