Comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives in the Turkish language

Comparative degree of adjectives

The comparative degree in the Turkish language is expressed by putting the noun being compared against in the ablative case, along with the words daha ‘more’ or çok daha ‘much more’.

Uçak trenden hızlıdır. - An airplane is faster than a train.
Uçak trenden daha hızlıdır. - An airplane is even faster than a train.
Uçak trenden çok daha hızlıdır. - An airplane is much faster than a train.

A lesser degree of a quality is expressed with the words az ‘less’ or daha az ‘even less’.

O senden az çalışkandır. - He is less hardworking than you.
O senden daha az çalışkandır. - He is even less hardworking than you.

In constructions with the words daha, çok daha, az, daha az, the noun in the ablative case can be omitted (if it is clear from the context).

Uçak daha hızlıdır. - The airplane is faster.

Superlative degree of adjectives and adverbs

The superlative degree is formed by placing the word en ‘the most’ before the adjective or adverb.

Bu en iyi ev. - This is the best house.
O en iyi Türkçe biliyor. - He knows Turkish the best.
En kalabalık ülke Çin’dir. - China is the most crowded country.

The word-building affix -(y)ıcı forms agent nouns—words that denote the doer of an action (similar to the English suffix ‘-er’). It is represented by the variants -(y)ıcı, -(y)ici, -(y)ucu, -(y)ücü depending on vowel harmony.
