The -(y)alı, -(y)eli and -dığından beri forms
In the Turkish language, there are two forms that are equivalent in meaning and are interchangeable. The first is a verbal adverb (gerund), while the second is a verbal noun construction. In English, these forms are translated using a complex sentence with a time clause starting with “since...”.
The affix -(y)alı, -(y)eli is attached directly to the verb stem:
- Buraya geleli iki ay oldu. - It has been two months since I came here.
- Maç başlayalı hiç gol almadı. - Since the match started, no goals have been scored.
The -dığından beri construction consists of the verb stem + the affix -dık, -dik, -duk, -dük (with k changing to ğ) + possessive affixes + the ablative case affix + the postposition beri:
Gelmek - gel + diğ + im + den beri
Ailemden ayrıldığımdan beri onları hiç aramadım. - I haven’t called my family at all since I left them.
Negative form
Sana mektup yazmadığımdan beri altı ay geçti. - Six months have passed since I last wrote you a letter (lit: since I haven’t written you a letter).

The -dığı halde form

This construction is formed as follows: the verb in the -dık, -dik, -duk, -dük form (with k changing to ğ) + possessive affixes + the function word hal in the locative case:
Gelmek - gel + diğ + im hal + de
