Grammar
Adjectives
Adjectives can function as:
- predicates and
- modifiers for nouns.
They conjugate and, depending on the conjugation type, are divided into groups:
- predicative adjectives ending in い (い-adjectives),
- semi-predicative adjectives ending in な (な-adjectives), and
- non-predicative adjectives.
Predicative Adjectives (い-adjectives)
Predicative adjectives are words ending in い.
These adjectives have invariable stems ending in the vowels:
あ, い, う, お, for example:
- あかい - red
- おおきい - big
- つめたい - cold
- あおい - blue
Predicative adjectives have three main forms distinguished by suffixes attached to their invariable stems:
- The い-form
- The く-form
- When modifying a noun - ない:
- As a predicate in polite speech - ないです or ありません:
- The けれ-form
The suffix い acts as the present/future tense marker. In the い-form, predicative adjectives are used to modify a noun or as a predicate in polite speech with the copula です, for example:
これはおおきいつくえです。 This is a big desk.
つくえはおおきいです。 The desk is big.
The く-form (adjective stem + suffix く) is used to form negative and other adjective forms.
The negative form of an adjective in the present/future tense is created by attaching the following to the く-form:
A + く + ない, where A is the adjective stem
For example:
おおきくないつくえ a not-big desk;
A + く + ないです or
A + く + ありません
In modern conversational speech, the following form is more common:
A + く + ないです
For example:
おおきくない - not big.
The adjectives いい, よい - “good” have a single く-form - よく.
The けれ-form is used to create the conditional form.
NOUN は な-ADJ [な] です
NOUN は い-ADJ (~い) です
です at the end of a sentence where the predicate is an adjective expresses politeness toward the listener.
い-adjectives keep their final い before です, whereas な-adjectives are placed before です without the [な] ending.
ワット先生は 親切です。 Mr. Watt is kind.
富士山は 高いです。 Mt. Fuji is high.
です indicates that the sentence is in the present/future tense and is affirmative.
な-Adj [な] じゃ ありません
The negative form of な-Adj [な] です is な-Adj [な] じゃ ありません
(な-Adj [な] では ありません).
あそこは 静かじゃ ありません。 That place is not quiet.
orあそこは 静かでは ありません。 That place is not quiet.
い-Adj [~い] です → ~くないです。
To form the negative of an い-adjective (い) です, the ending い is changed to くない.
この 本は おもしろくないです。 This book is not interesting.
The negative form of いいです is よくないです.
Interrogative sentences with an adjective as the predicate are formed the same way as sentences with a noun or verb as the predicate.
When answering, you should repeat the adjective used in the question. You cannot simply answer with そうです or そうじゃありません.
ペキンは 寒いですか。 Is it cold in Beijing?
…はい、寒いです。 ...Yes, it is cold.
琵琶湖の 水は きれいですか。 Is the water in Lake Biwa clean?
…いいえ、きれいじゃ ありません。...No, it is not clean.
な-Adj な Noun
い-Adj (~い) Noun
An adjective is placed before a noun to modify it. Before a noun, a な-adjective requires the な ending.
ワット先生は 親切な 先生です。 Mr. Watt is a kind teacher.
富士山は 高い 山です。 Fuji is a high mountain.
Adverbs in the Japanese language have no morphological markers and do not change form in a sentence, for example:
- すこし - a little,
- あいにく - unfortunately, etc.
Adverbs of degree and quantity directly precede the verb or adjective, while adverbs of time usually come before the subject word.
Adverbs modifying adjectives
Adverbs of degree modifying adjectives typically indicate the level of the quality expressed by that adjective. These adverbs usually stand directly before the adjective they modify, for example:
このざっしはとてもおもしろいです。 This magazine is very interesting.
これはとてもおもしろいざっしです。 This is a very interesting magazine.
Use of Adverbs
In Japanese, there are groups of adverbs that are used specifically in affirmative or negative sentences.
The adverb とても - “very” is used with adjectives and verbs in affirmative sentences, for example:
このえいがはとてもおもしろいです。 This movie is very interesting.
Certain adverbs are mainly used with adjectives and verbs in negative forms, where the negation applies to the adverb itself rather than the adjective or verb directly, for example:
このえいがはあまりおもしろくないです。 This movie is not very interesting.
Adverbs in this group include:
- あまり - not very / too (with negatives)
- そう - so (much)
- ちっとも - not the least bit
- すこしも - not at all
とても and あまり are adverbs of degree. They are placed before the adjectives they modify.
- とても is used in affirmative sentences and means “very”.
- あまり is used in negative sentences and, combined with a negative adjective, means “not very”.
ペキンは とても 寒いですか。 Is Beijing very cold?
これは とても 有名な 映画です。 This is a very famous movie.
シャンハイは あまり 寒くないです。 Shanghai is not very cold.
さくら大学は あまり 有名な 大学じゃ ありません。 Sakura University is not a very famous university.
NOUN は どうですか
This question is used to ask for the listener’s impression or opinion about a certain object, place, person, etc.
日本の 生活は どうですか。 How is life in Japan?
…楽しいです。 ...It is enjoyable.
Noun1 は どんな Noun2 ですか
This question pattern is used to ask someone to describe or explain Noun1.
Here, Noun2 denotes the category to which Noun1 belongs.
The interrogative word どんな is always followed by a noun.
奈良は どんな 町ですか。 What kind of town is Nara?
…古い 町です。 ...It is an old town.
Sentence1 が、 Sentence2
が is a conjunction meaning “but”. It is used to connect two sentences.
日本の 食べ物は おいしいですが、高いです。 Japanese food is delicious, but it is expensive.
どれ
This interrogative word is used when asking the listener to choose or specify one item out of three or more concrete items shown or mentioned.
ミラーさんの 傘は どれですか。 Which umbrella is Mr. Miller's?
…あの 赤い 傘です。 ...That red umbrella over there.
Interrogative pronoun どんな
The pronoun どんな - what kind of? (regarding qualities or properties) is used together with a noun, for example:
どんなじゅぎょうですか。 What kind of class? (interesting, boring, etc.)
Coordinating conjunction が
The conjunction が connects two coordinated sentences or homogeneous predicates. This conjunction is used after the predicate in its final form and has an adversative meaning of “but” or “however”, for example:
- This classroom is small, but that classroom is big.
- This apple is red, but it doesn't taste good.
The conjunction が can also be used in a connective sense, like “and”, for example:
This is a Japanese book, and this is also a Japanese book.
In writing, a comma “、” is usually placed after the conjunction が.
Numerals
The Japanese language uses both native Japanese and Chinese-derived numerals. There are ten native Japanese numerals:
- 一つ (ひとつ) - one
- 二つ (ふたつ) - two
- 三つ (みっつ, みつ) - three
- 四つ (よっつ, よつ) - four
- 五つ (いつつ) - five
- 六つ (むっつ, むつ) - six
- 七つ (ななつ) - seven
- 八つ (やつ, やっつ) - eight
- 九つ (ここのつ) - nine
- 十つ (とお) - ten
Native Japanese numerals are used when counting:
- years (age);
- abstract nouns, such as: points of view, topics, problems, etc.;
- fruits, balls, boxes, baskets;
- geographical features - seas, mountains, planets, etc.
In all other cases, Chinese numerals are used:
- 一 (いち) - one
- 二 (に) - two
- 三 (さん) - three
- 四 (し;よん) - four
- 五 (ご) - five
- 六 (ろく) - six
- 七 (しち;なな) - seven
- 八 (はち) - eight
- 九 (く;きゅう) - nine
- 十 (じゅう) - ten
Note that when counting, the numbers 4, 7, and 9 are usually read as:
- よん (4)
- なな (7)
- きゅう (9)
At the same time, し (4), しち (7), and く (9) are not pronounced.
There are objects and phenomena for which only native Japanese or only Chinese numerals are used when counting, but there are also cases where both native Japanese and Chinese numerals can be used. These different variations will be covered in more detail in subsequent lessons.
In a sentence, cardinal numbers can function as modifiers, the nominal part of a compound nominal predicate, or adverbial modifiers.
Counting system up to 10,000
When counting up to 10,000, place-value words are used:
| 十 | じゅう | ten |
| 百 | ひゃく | hundred |
| 千 | せん | thousand |
A number preceding a place-value word acts as a multiplier, and a number following it acts as an addend, for example:
When counting hundreds and thousands, phonetic changes occur, namely:
さんびゃく - 300
ろっぴゃく - 600
はっぴゃく - 800
さんぜん - 3000
はっせん - 8000
Note that:
- In numbers from 10 to 19, "ten" is always read as じゅう.
- In numbers from 100 to 199, "hundred" is always read as ひゃく.
- In numbers from 1000 to 1999, "thousand" is always read as せん.

Seasons in Japan
春 ・ 夏 ・ 秋 ・ 冬 - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter

There are four seasons in Japan:
- spring (March, April, May),
- summer (June, July, August),
- autumn (September, October, November), and
- winter (December, January, February).
Average temperatures vary by region, but the dynamics of change are almost the same everywhere (see the graph).
The hottest month is August, and the coldest is January or February.
For the Japanese: ‘it’s hot in summer’, ‘cool in autumn’, ‘cold in winter’, and ‘warm in spring’.
Word Formation
Root compounding
In the Japanese language, one of the ways to form new words is root compounding, which is the formation of words by combining Chinese roots—on readings. Lexically, this is the ‘addition’ of the meanings of these roots, for example:
毎 - every + 日 - day = 毎日 - every day.
The semantic relationships between roots can vary. For example, in the word 毎日, they are attributive, meaning the first root—まい—acts as a modifier for the second—にち.
Stem compounding
Another way of forming new words is stem compounding, which is the formation of words by combining the stems of words belonging to the same or different parts of speech. For instance, words denoting colors can be formed by combining noun stems, for example:
ちゃ tea + いろ color = ちゃいろ brown.
Some compound stem words have assimilated to predicative adjectives by acquiring the suffix い, for example:
き + いろ color = きいろい yellow.
There are words that have both forms, i.e., a noun form and an adjective form, for example:
きいろ and きいろい yellow.
Some words have only one form—the noun form, for example:
Rules for writing and reading loan words
To write loan words, Katakana characters are used. There are specific rules for writing loan words.
A syllable with an [L] sound is written with the corresponding character from the ら row, for example: lunch ランチ lunch.
A ‘V’-like sound in the syllables び, べ, ぼ in words borrowed from English is indicated by a combination of the character ウ with the corresponding vowel, for example:
walk rally - ウォーク・ラリ - orienteering;
western - ウォスタン - western.
The [V] sound in words borrowed from Russian is mostly indicated by the corresponding character from the バ row, for example:
ボーカリスト - vocalist.
Some words have two spellings depending on which language they were borrowed from, for example:
Hard consonants, except for [T] and [D], at the end of a word or before another consonant are indicated by the corresponding consonant combined with [U], meaning a syllable from the ウ row.
Mostly, the vowel [U] at the end of a word is pronounced, but in the middle of a word, it is reduced, for example:
プログラム - program
リスク - risk
サークル - circle (or club)
The consonants [T] and [D] in the syllables TI and DI are written as ティ and ディ, although sometimes チ and ヂ are encountered, for example:
ディスコ - disco
ティ - tea, but
チーム - team
Palatalized (soft) consonants preceding another consonant are indicated by the corresponding character from the イ row.
The vowel [I] is reduced in this case, for example:
イキスパート - expert (foreign specialist).
The [F] sound in the syllables FA, FI, FO, FE is indicated by a combination of フ with the corresponding vowel a, i, e, o, for example:
ファッション - fashion
フィギュア - figure
レフェリ - referee
フォーク - fork
