Japanese Grammar

The NOUN は NOUN です structure

1) The particle

The particle indicates that the noun before it is the topic of the sentence. You select the subject you want to talk about, add to show that it is the topic, and then make a statement about this topic.

わたしは マイク・ミラーです。 I am Mike Miller.

Note. The particle (ha) is read as (wa).

2) です

Nouns with です act as the predicate. です indicates a judgment or assertion. です also expresses the speaker’s politeness towards the listener.

です changes if the sentence is negative (see point 2 below) or in the past tense.

わたしは エンジニアです。 I am an engineer.

The particle can highlight not only the subject, but also circumstances of place and time, for example:

ここはです。 - The classroom is here.

はじゅぎょうです。 - The class is now.

NOUN は NOUN じゃありません

じゃ ありません (ja arimasen) is the negative form of です. In this form, it is used in conversational speech. In more formal speech or in writing, ではありません (dewa arimasen) is used.

サントスさんは 学生じゃ ありません。
Mr. Santos is not a student.
サントスさんは 学生では ありません。
Mr. Santos is not a student.

Note. in では is read as (wa).

Sentence か

1) The particle

The particle is used to express doubt, a question, uncertainty, etc.

A question is formed simply by adding to the end of the sentence. An interrogative sentence ends with a rising intonation.

2) Yes/No questions

As stated above, a sentence becomes a question if the particle is added at the end. The word order does not change.

An interrogative sentence formed this way asks whether the statement is true or not. Depending on whether you agree with the statement or not, your answer to such a question should begin with はい (yes) or いいえ (no) respectively.

ミラーさんは アメリカ ですか。 Is Mr. Miller American?
はい、アメリカじんです。 Yes, he is American.

ミラーさんは 先生ですか。 Is Mr. Miller a teacher?

いいえ、先生じゃ ありません。 No, he is not a teacher.

3) Sentences with question words

The question word replaces the part of the sentence relating to what you want to know. The word order does not change, and is added at the end.

あの は どなたですか。 Who is that person?
あの は ミラーさんです。 That is Mr. Miller.

Interrogative pronouns どのかた and どなた

The interrogative pronouns どのかた and どなた are translated as who, but どのかた is used in a situation when finding out which of the present people is Yamada-san or Tanaka-san, etc., for example:

山田さんは どの方 ですか。 - Which one is Mr. Yamada?
あの方です。 He is. (That person is.)

どなた is used when asking someone's name/identity, for example:

あの人は どなた ですか。 Who is he?
あの人は 田中さん です。 He is Tanaka.

Noun も

is added after the topic instead of when the same thing is asserted about this topic as about the previous one.

ミラーさんは 会社員ですか。 Is Mr. Miller a company employee?
グプタさんも 会社員ですか。 Is Mr. Gupta also a company employee?

Noun1 の

connects two nouns. NOUN1 modifies NOUN2.
In the examples given in this lesson, NOUN1 denotes an organization or group to which NOUN2 belongs.

ミラーさんはIMCの 社員です。 Mr. Miller is an employee of IMC.

~さん

さん (-san) is added to the name of the listener or a third person and shows the speaker's respect for that person.

The speaker cannot use さん with their own name.

あの は ミラーさんです。 This is Mr. Miller.

If you know your listener's name, you should avoid the pronoun あなた (you) in conversation, even when directly addressing them.

In such cases, the listener's surname is usually used with the addition of さん.

鈴木: ミラーさんは 学生ですか。
ミラー: いいえ、会社員です。

Suzuki: Are you a student?
Miller: No, I am a company employee.
