Demonstrative pronouns: これ/それ/あれ
Pitch accent of demonstrative pronouns: koRE, soRE, aRE, DOre.
Demonstrative pronouns:
- これ - this,
- それ - that,
- あれ - that over there,
- どれ - which?
- replace names of objects and animals. In some cases (when talking about inanimate objects), they translate as the pronouns he, she, it, they.
The pronouns これ, それ, あれ differ based on their distance from the speaker or the degree of familiarity between the interlocutors:
- これ - refers to an object closer to the speaker (first person)
- それ - refers to an object closer to the listener (second person)
- あれ - refers to an object distant from both the first and second person
The pronouns これ, それ, あれ can function in a sentence as a subject, an object, or the nominal part of a compound nominal predicate, but they cannot be modifiers (attributes). These pronouns change by case, just like nouns, but they do not have a genitive case form.
Examples:
- これは いすです。 - This is a chair.
- あれは 大学です。 - That over there is a university.
- ちずは それです。 - The map is that one (near you).
- それは でんわです。 - That is a telephone.
- つくえは これです。 - The desk is this one (here).
- まどは あれです。 - The window is that one over there.
- それは 辞書 ですか。 - Is that (near you) a dictionary?
- これを ください。 - Please give me this. (Lesson 2)
Interrogative pronoun どれ
The interrogative pronoun corresponding to the demonstrative pronouns これ, それ, あれ is どれ.
The pronoun どれ forms a specific question and is used to mean:
- which?
- which one? (out of available items)
- where?
For example:
きょうかしょはどれですか。 Which one is the textbook? (out of available items)
The answer to such a question could be:
きょうかしょはこれです。 The textbook is this one.
Examples:
- かみは どれですか。 - かみは これです。
- かばんは どれですか。 - かばんは それです。
- かごは どれですか。 - かごは それです。
- えは どれですか。 - えは あれです。
この Noun /その Noun /あの Noun
Demonstrative adjectives:
- この - “this”,
- その - “that”,
- あの - “that over there”,
- どの - “which?”
- are used as modifiers to a noun.
These demonstrative adjectives do not decline, and in a sentence they are never used independently, but only in combination with a noun:
For example:
その まど - that window
あの ペン - that pen over there
その かばんは あなたの ですか。 - Is that bag yours?
わたしは この グループの せんせい です。 - I am a teacher in this group.
この 本は わたしのです。 - This book is mine.
あの 方は どなたですか。 - Who is that person over there?
Among themselves, the words この, その, あの differ based on their distance from the speaker or the degree of familiarity between the interlocutors.
- KONO is used when referring to an object located near the speaker, belonging to them, having some relation to them, or known to them;
- SONO is used when referring to an object located near the listener, belonging to them, having some relation to them, or known to the listener but not the speaker;
- ANO is used when the object is located at some distance from both the speaker and the listener, or if the object is mutually known to both interlocutors.

For instance, if a book is closer to the speaker, they will refer to it using KONO; if the book is closer to the listener, the speaker will refer to it using SONO; if both are standing near a window talking about a tree in the yard, they will both refer to it using ANO.
Example dialogue:
- その ペンは あなたの ですか。
- はい、この ペンは わたしの です。
- Is that pen yours? (Pointing to a pen lying in front of the listener).
- Yes, this pen is mine.
- この ペンも あなたの ですか。
- いいえ、その ペンは わたしの ではありません。あなたの です。
- And is this pen also yours? (Pointing to a pen near oneself).
- No, that pen is not mine. It's yours.
- どの ペンが せんせいの ですか。
- あの ペンが せんせいの です。
- And which pen (here) is the teacher's?
- That one (over there) is the teacher's pen.
Interrogative word どの
DONO - “which (out of many items)?” - is the corresponding interrogative modifier.
Just like KONO, SONO, and ANO, the interrogative word DONO is used only as a modifier attached to a noun.
An interrogative sentence with DONO represents a specific question (i.e., one that requires specific information in the answer: exactly which one out of a series of items...?).
This word does not decline and is used only in combination with the noun it modifies.
For example:
どの えんぴつ ですか。 その えんぴつ です。 - Which pencil (out of those here)? - That pencil. (The pencil is that one.)
たなかさんの ほんは どの(ほん)ですか。その ほん です。 - Which book (out of those here) is Mr. Tanaka's? That book.
アンナさんの つくえは どの (つくえ)ですか。この つくえ です。 - Which desk (here) is Anna's? This one.
せんせいの いすは どの (いす)ですか。 あの いす です。 - Which chair (here) is the teacher's? That one over there.
Note! If DONO acts as a modifier for a noun that serves as the subject, this subject MUST be marked with the nominative particle - GA.
| DONO + | Subject noun | + GA + | Predicate DESU KA |
For example:
どの かばん が あなたの ですか。 Which bag is yours?
Note! If the answer maintains the grammatical structure of the question, the subject must also be marked with the nominative particle GA.
For example:
この かばんが わたしの です。 - This bag is mine (and not that one or the other one).
この かばんは わたしの です。 - This bag is mine (and not yours or his).
Interrogative pronouns どなた / だれ
The interrogative pronouns どなた/だれ - “who?” are used in a sentence containing a specific question (i.e., one that requires specific information in the answer, such as where, when, how much, etc.).
These pronouns differ in their level of politeness:
- どなた - more polite,
- だれ - slightly less polite.
For example:
- その かたは どなた ですか。
- この かたは インドネシアの アリさん です。
- Who is that gentleman/lady?
- This is Mr. Ari from Indonesia.
- あの おんなのひとは だれ ですか
- あの おんなのひとは にほんごの がくせい です。
- Who is that woman?
- She is a Japanese language student.
Note!
- In a question containing the name of a person about whom you want to get information, どなた and だれ cannot be used.
- In a sentence with a compound nominal predicate, どなた and だれ cannot stand in the subject position if the sentence contains any pronoun, person's name, or a word denoting their social role.
- If DONO KATA or DONO HITO are in the subject position in an interrogative sentence, they take GA.
Accordingly, if the answer maintains the structure of the question, GA is placed after the subject in the answer:
For example, you cannot ask:
たなかさんは だれ ですか。
If we want to find out which person (among a group) is so-and-so... we must use DONO HITO or DONO KATA.
やまもとせんせいは どのかた ですか。
That is, you cannot say, for example:
だれが あのひと ですか。
The correct version is:
あのかたは どなた ですか。
たなかさんが せんせい です。
The nominative case particle が
The marker for the nominative case is the particle が.
In a sentence, the subject is in the nominative case when logical emphasis falls on it; that is, the information conveyed by the subject is new. For example:
アンナさんが学生です。 - Anna (and no one else) is the student.
This is precisely why all interrogative pronouns—and nouns with a modifier expressed by an interrogative word—in the role of the subject take the nominative case marker が. For example:
どれが 本 ですか。 - Which one (out of available items) is the book?
When answering an interrogative sentence where the interrogative pronoun has the nominative case form が, the subject of the response sentence also takes the nominative case form が. For example:
どなたが 先生 ですか。 - 山田さんが 先生 です。 - Who is the teacher? Yamada is the teacher.
どれが 本 ですか。 - それが 本 です。 - Which one is the book? That is the book.
どれが しんぶん ですか。 - Where (which one) is the newspaper?
これが しんぶん です。 - This is the newspaper.
これです。 - This one.
しんぶんは これ です。 - The newspaper is this one.
In sentences where the subject is in the nominative case (marked by が), the predicate communicates already known information, which is the topic of the statement.
Compare these two sentences:
- それが 本 です。 - That is the book.
- それは 本 です。 - That is a book.
The first sentence is an answer to the question:
どれが 本 ですか。 Which one is the book?
While the second one answers:
これは なん ですか。 What is this?
Thus, the primary information in the first sentence is embedded in the word それ, while in the second sentence, it is in the word 本.
For example:
- どなたが 学生 ですか。
- アンナさんが 学生 です。 - どなたが 先生 ですか。
- 山田さんが 先生 です。 - どれが でんわ ですか。
- それが でんわ です。 - どれが しんぶん ですか。
- これが しんぶん です。
Interrogative pronoun なに
Using the question word NANI (NAni), we form a specific question with the meaning “what?”, “what kind of...?” and use it to ask about objects.
The pronoun NANI changes by case just like a noun. In a sentence, this pronoun can be the subject, modifier, object, or the nominal part of a compound nominal predicate.
If NANI is followed by a word starting with the sounds n, t, d, b, y, the final i can be dropped, and NANI takes the form NAN.
For example:
それはじどうしゃです。 - That is an automobile.
そうです / そうじゃ ありません
The word そう is often used when answering questions that require a positive or negative response, in cases where the predicate in the question is a noun.
- Affirmative answer: はい、そうです。
- Negative answer: いいえ、そうじゃ ありません。
...はい、そうです。 ...Yes (, it is).
それは テレホンカードですか。 Is that a telephone card?
いいえ、そうじゃ ありません。 ...No (, it is not).
The verb ちがいます (literally: “to differ, to be different”) can be used in the meaning of - そうじゃ ありません。
いいえ、ちがいます ...No (, it isn't).
Interrogative sentence in negative form
Noun1 は Noun2 じゃ ありませんか。
In Lesson 4, we looked at interrogative sentences without a question word asked in the affirmative form. But such a question can also be asked in a negative form; in this case, the structure of the interrogative sentence will be as follows:
あの人は 学生 では ありませんか。 Isn't he a student?
Usually, such questions are asked when the speaker assumes that the statement Noun1 は Noun2 です。 is correct—that is, あの人は 学生 です。 - He is a student—but wants to hear confirmation of this.
The listener, understanding the confirming nuance of the question, answers:
Affirmatively:
はい、あの人は 学生 です。 - Yes, he is a student.
Negatively:
いいえ、学生 では ありません。 - No, he is not a student.
When answering such a question, you are required to make a choice between alternatives: Sentence 1 or Sentence 2.
The chosen sentence is given as the answer to this type of question.
Neither はい nor いいえ can be used.
Is this a “9” or a “7”?
... 「 9 」です ... It's a “9”.
Noun 1 の Noun 2
In Lesson 7, you learned that の is used to connect two nouns when Noun 1 modifies Noun 2.
In this lesson, you will learn two other ways to use the particle の.
1. Noun 1 explains what Noun 2 is about.
これは コンピューターの 本です。 This is a book about computers.
2. Possessive pronouns
Noun 1 shows who owns Noun 2.
これは わたしの 本です。 This is my book.
Noun 2 can be omitted when it is already clear what is being talked about.
However, if Noun 2 denotes a person, it cannot be omitted.
あれは だれの かばんですか。 Whose bag is that?
…さとうさんのです。 ...Ms. Sato's.
この かばんは あなたのですか。 Is this your bag?
…いいえ、わたしのじゃ ありません。 ...No, it's not mine.
ミラーさんは IMC の 社員ですか。 Is Mr. Miller an employee of IMC?
…はい、 IMC の 社員です。 ...Yes, he is an employee of IMC.
In the Japanese language, a class of possessive pronouns as such does not exist.
Possessive pronouns are formed by attaching the genitive case suffix の to personal pronouns, for example:
| 私の | - my, mine; |
| 私たちの | - our, ours; |
| あなたの | - your, yours (singular); |
| あなたがたの | - your, yours (plural); |
| あの人の | - his, her, hers; |
| あの方の | - his, her, hers; |
| あの人たちの | - their, theirs; |
| あの方がたの | - their, theirs; |
| だれの、どなたの | - whose? |
そうですか。
This expression is used when the speaker receives new information and demonstrates that they have taken it in and understood it.
この かさは あなたの ですか。
いいえ、ちがいます。 シュミットさんの です。
そうですか。
- Is this umbrella yours?
- No, it isn't. It's Mr. Schmidt's.
- I see.

Greetings in Japanese
At the first business meeting, it is customary to exchange business cards.
When moving, it is customary to pay a courtesy visit to the new neighbors, introduce yourself, and offer a small gift, such as a towel, soap, or sweets.
- では、また。 - See you later!

This expression is used when meeting relatives in the morning, including older family members, as well as when meeting acquaintances. A less formal version is おはよう.
This expression is used when meeting people during the day, except for your own family members. (In modern orthography, こんにちは is always written in hiragana).
